Total Lunar Eclipse
When: May 26 before sunrise
The biggest astronomical event of the month is also one of the biggest of the entire year for North America as the sun, Earth and moon align to create a total lunar eclipse just before daybreak on May 26.
The Moon will enter the outer edge of Earth’s shadow (called the “penumbra”) at 4:46 A.M. EDT (1:46 A.M. PDT) and reach the darkest part of its shadow (the “umbra”) at 5:45 A.M. EDT (2:45 A.M. PDT). The Moon will leave the umbra at 8:53 A.M. EDT (5:53 A.M. PDT) and the penumbra at 9:51 A.M. EDT (6:51 A.M. PDT).
This will be the first total lunar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States since Jan. 20-21, 2019.
